Ipek Burรงak: The Autistic Turn + Kolonel Blip DJ Set

Multimedia Reading and Listening Performance of the
book โ€œThe Autistic Turnโ€ by Ipek Burรงak (TR/DE) + DJ
Set Kolonel Blip (TR/AT)

The Autistic Turn is a project of Ipek Burรงak which includes an artistโ€™s book and spreads itself into other forms and media.

In this project, she is engaged in building neurodiverse and feminist
future scenarios where human and non-human agents meet each other in an uncanny valley at very high temperatures. As there is not much water left, water brings different communities together in a hammam-like setting. The Autistic Turn is based on research about affective computing, robots that show and recognise emotions, the idiosyncrasies of the autism spectrum, how they come together and the politics beside affects. These also enable connections with shamanist practices and matriarchal structures. Autistic turn comes after the previous turns such as the affective turn and other western feminist turns and aims to bring a fresh wave. Links, facts and non-facts emerge that in turn affect affective computing.

The reading and listening performance leans on and opens up the book and its audio version. Cut-up poems are complemented by visuals and multi-layered recordings.

Subjective Excess: Labour and Affects as Fields of Struggle

Subjective Excess: Labour and Affects as Fields of Struggle

The seminar โ€˜Subjective Excess: Labour and Affects as Fields of Struggleโ€™ critically approaches labour in capitalism, its relation to intertwined modes of power and oppression as well as the mobilization of affects as a source of resistance and action. The different viewpoints come together in the question of how the production of subjectivity can become a field of political struggle. The analysis of political subjectivity requires efforts of both examining the conditions which produce contemporary forms of subjectivity and investigating the forms of struggle that arise and can be built in a given social conjuncture.

The day will consist on two thematic discussions. Each discussion starts with short introductions to the theme (approximately 5โ€“10 minutes each) after which all participants are welcome to participate in the discussion. We will wrap up with a concluding discussion. The discussions are followed by drinks, some food and music.

Description:

Session I: Subjective Excess and Contemporary Exploitation

Capitalism is a mode of production based on the exploitation of an excess in the subjectivity of labour. This means that the capitalist mode of production is based on the subjective disproportion between the productive power of labour and labour power as a commodity, however inseparable from the gendered and racialised body. By identifying this gap, capitalโ€™s radical instability is laid bare: the valorization of capital takes place on the same terrain on which the contradictions and antagonisms that characterize the capitalist mode of production are formed.

The session addresses the question of how the subjective disproportion within the contemporary forms of work can be understood? What are the subjective aspects that become exploited in areas such as reproductive work, knowledge work or in platform work?

Session II: Anxiety and Affects

It goes without saying that most of us are very anxious. Anxiety throws a shadow over all areas of emotions, enjoyment and self-expression and is often explained through individual psychologisation. The roots of these anxieties are however structural and socially produced. Anxiety is also deeply intertwined with precarity as a form of insecurity, which treats people as disposable in order to impose control. Precarity leads to generalised hopelessness and the feeling of losing the grip over oneโ€™s future.

However, affects such as hopelessness and anxiety need not only be a suppressor of the potential to develop productive and emancipative affects. Mobilizing these affects โ€“ stemming from feelings of subordination, precarization to name a few โ€“ could potentially lead us to action, towards a change of the capitalist system and a new world-bearing aesthetics. Thus, we need to examine the intersections between multiple experiences of the precarity-producing system and the anxiety it results in, in order to develop possible paths to transformation.

The session discusses why we all are so anxious and how could we take hold of the affects produced in relation to precarity and subordination as basis of struggle?

Sonja Donner: I went to the place and I was afraid of the place - book release

A memory: Mud... trash... footstep... invisible things... a thing from childhood that you also may remember? A wooden construction that is built to shield a machine... a little hut made to shield a place from rain, a tarp to shield an open hole in the ground, a rock laid down on another. I walk past these things, there is a crack from which I see to the inside: an empty room, sometimes an abandoned room, sometimes a place of an important, yet unknown event. I went to the place and I was afraid of the place. I like to think of it so that I'm paying my respects to the place: I make a circle around it, I stop, nod and say mm-hmm.

Iina Esko: Soft - zine release

Celebrating the release of Iina Eskoโ€™s new zine, Soft ๐Ÿš

In a dream I saw the old square of Siena. It was limbo. The square, like the whole town, was somewhere high up. There was no horizon. The square was tilted and covered in ice. There were people skating on it and a cembalo was playing a Christmas tune. Otherwise, it was quiet. I wondered how people could skate on the tilted plane, the angle must have been 40 degrees. That's quite a tilt for limbo-skating.

A few years later, I am standing on the old square in Siena. You can't see the horizon. There is no ice but the square is indeed a bit tilted, perhaps five or ten degrees. This is the square after the limbo, and also outside it. I feel somehow calm and good.

Itโ€™s better now. Donโ€™t you think so?

It helps if you're softer.
